With the recent political changes in Egypt, Gaza is once again affected by the results. During the era of Mubarak, really only over a year ago, tunnels existed in secret between Gaza and Egypt. When the government took notice of this and discovered a tunnel, the Egyptian military closed them up.
The tunnels, primarily used for arms smuggling, were also the source of trafficking aid and goods to the Gazan people. Hamas would tax products, depending on supply/demand, and use profits to finance their governance over Gaza as well as plan for future military operations.
How successful were these tunnels? When the iPhone 5 came out, it could be found in Gaza in October 2012 -- THREE months before its release in Israel!
When Morsi came to power, he endorsed the tunnels. Morsi, who took a large package of free money from the US government, encouraged that the tunnels be used and a new legality. Their secrecy was no more, and the Egyptian government and military knew most of the locations.
Products and traffic began to reduce in value, as many more were flooding into Gaza with supplies, luxury goods, and weaponry.
Then, with the latest revolution, an opposing military came to power. Fearing Hamas's ties to Morsi, they immediately became enemies of the new military government. The tunnels, no longer secret, were destroyed. And the few not destroyed are heavily monitored by the Egyptian military. Prices are currently skyrocketing in Gaza while scarcity fills the tiny land plot with 1.6mm individuals.
