Nelson Mandela & Robert Mugabe. Two world renown anti-apartheid rulers that changed modern global politics. After receiving independence from Great Britain, the new South African nation reached utter change in the 1990s when former prisoner Nelson Mandela came to power as president. Which ended an era of racially segregated rule.
This most celebrated South African, Mandela, sits today in a nearly vegetative state. Shortly before his 95th birthday. While his children fight over where he is to be buried.
Mandela's ascension to power was a historic victory and a powerful statement against racism, although economic decisions in his administration began the South African rand's loss of purchasing power.
However, the Rand is a far stronger currency than the Zimbabwean Dollar. Mandela's counterpart, Robert Mugabe, came to power in a similar fashion. A most celebrated man, he led rebellion against British Rhodesia, and racial apartheid.
But after coming to power, and serving his term, Mugabe did not leave. In fact, in this coming election, he is expected to win with 90% of the vote.
What are the implications? Mugabe has sent Zimbabwe spiraling into economic devastation. A Zimbabwean dollar was worth as much as a dirham nearly 10 years ago. But 5 years ago, it was cheaper to use money for toilet paper than actually buy a roll!
The problem became so bad that the currency was suspended in 2009 after inflation rates reached over 5 000 000 000 000 %. The country now officially uses US Dollars, South African Rands, and Euros to circulate.
While one reformer lies quietly in his death bed, beloved world wide, the other seeks another term of power in a land where he destroyed the economy.
